Steel Grating Types and Applications

Different grating structures can be manufactured according to load requirements, clear span, installation conditions and appearance requirements. The bearing bars carry the main load, while the cross members maintain spacing and provide structural stability.

Bearing bar size, spacing, panel dimensions and surface type should be selected according to the actual working conditions of the project.

Welded Grating

Welded grating is manufactured by resistance welding the cross bars to the bearing bars under controlled pressure and heat. The welded structure provides reliable connections and good overall rigidity.

It is commonly used for industrial platforms, walkways, stair treads, trench covers and equipment access areas.

Press-Locked Grating

Press-locked grating is produced by accurately slotting the bearing bars and cross bars and pressing them together under high pressure. The flat-bar structure creates a regular grid pattern and a clean appearance.

It can be used for platforms, walkways, screens, façades and projects where both structural performance and appearance are important.

Swage-Locked Grating

Swage-locked grating uses a mechanical locking structure to connect the cross members with the bearing bars. The connection maintains uniform spacing while forming a stable grid panel.

Dimensions and bar arrangements can be adjusted according to the required load and project design.

Bearing Bars, Spacing and Load Requirements

Load capacity is affected by bearing bar depth and thickness, bearing bar spacing, clear span and support conditions. These factors should be considered together rather than selecting the grating only by panel size.

Serrated bearing bars can be used where additional slip resistance is required.

Surface Treatment Options

Carbon steel products can be supplied with hot-dip galvanized, painted or sherardized finishes according to the service environment and corrosion protection requirements. Stainless steel versions can be supplied with a cleaned or polished surface depending on project requirements.
