Hexagonal Wire Mesh

Overview

Hexagonal Wire Mesh is manufactured by twisting adjacent wires together to form a continuous hexagonal pattern. This twist-weaving construction provides excellent flexibility, allowing the mesh to conform to uneven or irregular surfaces while maintaining reliable strength and structural stability.

According to wire diameter and application requirements, hexagonal wire mesh is generally divided into two types. Lightweight hexagonal wire mesh, commonly known as chicken wire, is typically manufactured with wire diameters from 0.5 mm to 1.6 mm and is widely used for poultry fencing, garden protection, animal enclosures and general-purpose fencing. Heavy-gauge hexagonal wire mesh uses wire diameters from 1.7 mm to 4.0 mm and provides greater strength and durability. It is widely used as the primary mesh material for woven gabion baskets, gabion mattresses and other gabion structures, as well as for slope stabilization, rockfall protection and other engineering applications.

QB METAL supplies hexagonal wire mesh in galvanized steel, PVC-coated steel and stainless steel. Various mesh openings, wire diameters, roll widths and roll lengths are available, with custom specifications and OEM services to meet different agricultural, construction and industrial requirements.

FAQ

Lightweight hexagonal wire mesh is typically manufactured with wire diameters from 0.5 mm to 1.6 mm. Common materials include galvanized steel wire and stainless steel wire, and the mesh is available in 3-twist and 6-twist constructions. PVC-coated lightweight hexagonal wire mesh is generally produced by first twisting the galvanized wire into mesh and then applying a PVC coating to the finished mesh, improving corrosion resistance and weather resistance. It is mainly used for poultry fencing, garden protection, animal enclosures and other general-purpose applications.

Heavy-gauge hexagonal wire mesh is typically manufactured with wire diameters from 1.7 mm to 4.0 mm and is available in 3-twist and 5-twist constructions. It provides higher strength and structural stability and is mainly used for woven gabions, gabion mattresses, slope protection, rockfall protection and other engineering applications. Heavy-gauge PVC-coated hexagonal wire mesh is generally produced by applying PVC coating to the wire first and then twisting the coated wire into mesh, helping meet the corrosion-resistance and service-life requirements of demanding engineering environments.

For poultry farming, commonly used chicken wire includes hot-dip galvanized chicken wire and PVC-coated chicken wire. Recommended mesh sizes include 1/2″, 3/4″, and 1″, with common wire diameters ranging from 0.5 mm to 0.8 mm.

These specifications offer good cost efficiency and a relatively long service life, making them suitable for chicken coops, poultry fencing, and general farming enclosures.

The fence height, length, mesh size, and wire diameter can be selected and customized according to the poultry type, farming scale, and indoor or outdoor application environment.

Common galvanizing options for hexagonal wire mesh include electro-galvanizing, standard hot-dip galvanizing, and heavy hot-dip galvanizing. The main differences are the zinc coating weight, corrosion resistance, and suitable application environment.

Electro-galvanized hexagonal wire mesh has a relatively thin zinc coating and lower cost, but its corrosion resistance is limited. It is generally suitable for indoor use or environments with low corrosion exposure.

Standard hot-dip galvanized hexagonal wire mesh typically has a zinc coating of about 40–60 g/m², providing better rust protection for poultry fencing, garden protection, and general outdoor applications.

Heavy hot-dip galvanized hexagonal wire mesh can have a zinc coating of around 250 g/m², offering significantly better long-term corrosion resistance. It is more suitable for heavy-gauge hexagonal mesh, woven gabions, slope protection, river engineering, and other applications exposed to outdoor or humid environments for long periods. The zinc coating weight can also be customized according to project requirements.
