Chicken Wire Structure and Applications

Chicken Wire is produced by continuously twisting adjacent wires to form a regular hexagonal mesh. Unlike welded mesh, the wires are connected through twisted joints rather than welded intersections, giving the finished mesh greater flexibility and allowing it to follow uneven ground, curved boundaries and irregular enclosure shapes.

Both 3-twist and 6-twist constructions are available. Mesh opening, wire diameter and twisting type can be selected according to the required mesh specification, enclosure strength and application.

Mesh Opening and Wire Diameter

Smaller mesh openings are generally selected for smaller animals or applications requiring denser containment, while larger wire diameters provide greater mesh strength. The appropriate combination should be selected according to animal size, fence height and the required level of protection.

Common poultry fencing specifications include 1/2″, 3/4″ and 1″ openings. Wire diameter can be selected according to the required mesh strength and enclosure conditions.

Material and Surface Treatment

The mesh can be manufactured from galvanized steel wire, stainless steel wire or copper wire according to different application requirements.

Galvanized steel wire is commonly used for poultry, garden and general outdoor enclosure applications. Stainless steel wire is suitable for environments requiring higher corrosion resistance, while copper wire can also be supplied for special or customized applications.

Galvanized products are generally woven directly from galvanized wire. For PVC-coated products, the mesh is normally woven first and then coated with PVC, forming an additional protective layer over the finished mesh. Green and black are common PVC colors, while other colors can be customized.

Poultry, Garden and Light Enclosure Applications

Chicken Wire is commonly used for poultry runs, chicken and duck enclosures, small animal cages, garden boundaries, vegetable areas and plant protection.

The flexible mesh can also be used for partitions and other light-duty enclosure applications where a rigid welded mesh structure is not required.
